Oil

Unravelling the Carbon Web

"The meek shall inherit the Earth, but not the mineral rights."
An advert for The Economist, November 1995.

Oil flows through the bloodstream of the metropolis of London, through the belly of the nation, through the veins of contemporary industrial cultures.

It flows beneath the surface of everything from a biro to the key commodity in the City, from the lubricant of a bicycle chain to two of the largest companies in the world - Royal Dutch/Shell and BP. The use of the computer you're using to access this website depends on some far distant source of this fuel - fuel to make plastics for the keyboard, fuel to transport the components from factory to factory to retail outlet, fuel to generate the electricity that powers and lights the screen before you. What is the origin and future of this fuel? What of the social justice implications of its extraction, refining and distribution? And what of the ecological impacts? How are companies structured that exist to squeeze the most possible advantage from this non-renewable and precious resource ? How far will we, companies and governments go to get their hands on this 'black gold', and how ready are we for when it runs out?

These questions and more are addressed through sub-projects of 90% CRUDE:
